Privacy Policy

Last updated: 19 July 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how Briefshelf ("Briefshelf", "we", "us" or "our") collects, uses, and protects your personal data when you use our website at briefshelf.com and our mobile application (together, the "Service"). It also describes the rights you have over your data. By using the Service you agree to the practices described here.

1. Who we are

Briefshelf provides short-form book summaries you can read or listen to, along with curated learning paths. The data controller responsible for your personal data is Eduard Mateu Molins. If you have any question about this policy or your data, contact us at privacy@briefshelf.com.

2. Data we collect

We only collect the data we need to run the Service. Specifically:

Category What it includes When we collect it
Account data Email address, display name, and a securely hashed password (we never store your password in plain text). When you create an account with email and password.
Sign-in provider data When you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive a unique identifier, your email address, and (for Google) your name and profile picture. Apple provides your name only on your first sign-in, and may relay a private, anonymised email address. When you choose "Continue with Google" or "Continue with Apple".
Usage & content data Your library, reading and listening progress, saved summaries, learning-path progress, and reading streaks. As you use the app, to sync your progress across devices.
Device & technical data A device identifier used to associate a session with your device, plus standard technical information such as IP address and general log data. Automatically, when you use the Service.
Website analytics Aggregated usage statistics collected via Google Analytics on our website (e.g. pages visited, approximate location, device type). When you browse briefshelf.com.

3. How we use your data

  • To create and manage your account and authenticate you.
  • To provide the core Service: deliver summaries, sync your library and progress, and maintain your streaks.
  • To keep the Service secure, prevent abuse, and diagnose technical problems.
  • To understand, in aggregate, how the Service is used so we can improve it.
  • To comply with our legal obligations.

We do not sell your personal data, and we do not use it for third-party advertising.

4. Legal bases for processing (GDPR)

If you are in the European Economic Area or the UK, we rely on the following legal bases:

  • Performance of a contract — to provide the account and features you request.
  • Legitimate interests — to secure, maintain, and improve the Service, provided your rights do not override those interests.
  • Consent — for non-essential analytics cookies on our website. You can withdraw consent at any time.
  • Legal obligation — where we must retain or disclose data by law.

5. Sharing and third parties

We share data only with service providers who help us operate the Service, and only to the extent needed. These include:

  • Google — Sign-In and, on the website, Google Analytics.
  • Apple — Sign in with Apple.
  • Our hosting and database provider — to store your account and progress data securely.

These providers act as data processors on our behalf and are bound to protect your data. We may also disclose data where required by law, or to protect our rights, users, or the public.

6. International transfers

Some of our providers may process data outside your country, including outside the EEA. Where that happens, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses.

7. Data retention

We keep your personal data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we delete or anonymise your personal data within a reasonable period, except where we must retain certain information to comply with legal obligations or resolve disputes.

8. Your rights

Depending on where you live, you have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you.
  • Correct inaccurate or incomplete data.
  • Delete your data ("right to be forgotten").
  • Restrict or object to certain processing.
  • Receive your data in a portable format.
  • Withdraw consent at any time, where processing is based on consent.

To exercise any of these rights, email us at privacy@briefshelf.com. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

Deleting your account

You can request deletion of your account and associated personal data at any time by contacting privacy@briefshelf.com.

9. Data security

We use industry-standard measures to protect your data, including encrypted connections (HTTPS), hashed passwords, and secure storage of authentication tokens on your device. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we work to protect your data against unauthorised access, loss, or misuse.

10. Children

The Service is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country), and we do not knowingly collect their data. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, contact us and we will delete it.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, notify you within the Service. We encourage you to review this page periodically.

12. Contact us

If you have any questions about this Privacy Policy or how we handle your data, contact us at privacy@briefshelf.com.
